BrightID update May 2022

BrightID Project Update

Since the latest BrightID update, it’s now easier to connect with friends you already know. Update your profile and give the Find Friends feature a try. And this month, we had an interesting AMA about ETHstaker using BrightID.

Find your friends on BrightID

Recently the BrightID app has been updated to version 4.15. This update makes it easier for you to find friends that already use the BrightID app. This feature helps you make connections with people you already know.
When you try the Find Friends button in the main menu, the BrightID app will try to find BrightID users that match people in your contacts list by phone or email address. This implies that you have to give BrightID access to the contacts on your phone. As privacy is crucial to BrightID, the app does not share these details. You don’t have to worry about your contact details because they never leave your phone. The contact details are hashed and the matching uses those hashes so that your information remains private.

One thing to note is that your friends must have added their phone number and/or email address to their BrightID profile. Otherwise, you can not find them. Of course, that also works the other way around. If you want your friends to be able to find you, go and add your phone number and email to your profile now and turn on syncing with the Sync button on your profile.

You can also add your Discord and Twitter handle on your profile, but these are not yet used to find friends. That is technically not yet possible, but we are exploring options to make that possible too.

BrightID AMA on ETHStaker

This month, one of the topics in our weekly “Ask Me Anything” meetings (AMAs) was the ETHStaker funding round. The ETHStaker community has teamed up with CLR.fund to run a funding round with 350.000 DAI, backed by the Ethereum foundation. The funding round is dedicated to funding open-source public goods for the Ethereum staking ecosystem. Our guest, @superphiz attended the AMA to answer all our questions.

To prevent sybil attacks and fake users in general, ETHstaker uses BrightID. So you need your BrightID to contribute to the projects and make your contribution count for the matching pool. An excellent example of BrightID in action. As always, if you missed the AMA you will find it later on the BrightID Youtube channel.
